TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH ANXIETY

As a person who has been dealing with anxiety for over 10 years, and traveling just as many, it would be crazy for me not to include some tips for you on how to ease the anxiety that naturally comes along with the insanity of travel. I honestly think there are some people who thrive off of the unpredictability of travel, and that folks, is me.  Guilty as charged!

Over the years I have learned how to keep this anxiety at bay while traveling, although it can sneak up on the best of us.   Here are my best tips to keep you feeling sane when the anxiety makes your skin start to crawl.

1. YOGA IS YOUR BEST FRIEND

I started doing yoga about 5 years ago, and it has been essential in my battle with anxiety.  I strongly recommend it to those who are looking for a way to calm their nerves. Do yoga as much as you possibly can, wherever you can, whenever you can. It will ground you, and grounding is something that is vital in assisting with your nerves and mindset.

You wouldn’t believe how many bathrooms I have downward dogged in. (not for the germophobes) Of course I washed my hands afterward you guys!  Hey, if you have real anxiety, YOU UNDERSTAND!

2.  SHIFT YOUR MINDSET

I am not sure where your anxiety stems from, but mine is rooted in feeling like there is not possibly enough time for me to complete all of the tasks I have set forth for myself. When I am traveling, those tasks become even more difficult to accomplish because of spotty wifi and knowing that I have limited hours between the next flight. It can be so overwhelming!

After introducing meditation to my daily routine this year, I have seen tremendous strides in my mindset regarding the accomplishment of tasks. A great app that is useful for meditation is the Headspace app, but even more so, I love the daily meditations from Kristy Sinsara on Soundcloud.  They are AMAZING and change my day in an instant. Please check her out!

3.  REDUCE ANXIETY WITH TRAVEL

ORGANIZATION

Those of us who are overly anxious need to curtail our stress factor by staying more organized. Don’t worry planning phobe freaks, you can do this! (and don’t worry, I am right there with you) I am one of those people who despise planning, but these travel tips for organization really do help with calming me down a bit.

One thing I always do is put my confirmation number in my phone notes ahead of time. I will also then screenshot my boarding pass on my phone so that everything is ready to go at the airport. These minor tips might seem not worth it, but in the long are extremely beneficial!

4. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

All forms of anxiety are a bit different so some people may be disturbed by the travel mishaps that occur frequently while traveling. The flat tires, the missed flights, the broken down cars, the nights when you flew by the seat of your pants too much and never found a room to sleep in. By the way, all of these have happened to me at one point.

With travel, in most cases, it is really important to roll with the punches! Fortunately, I am one of those anxious people who feed off chaos, so I rather relish these times. Lucky me!

5.  DRINK THAT TEA

Chamomile tea is my usual go to for helping get rid of any kind of anxiety, and I usually throw a few packets in my travel bag in case I want to use it at hotels that allow you to use hot water. I absolutely love Yogi tea and there is also a Yerbamate tea known as Taragui that you should look into.

It is a unique and nutritious tea made from the leaves of Ilex Paraguariensis, a tree that grows only in subtropical South America. This tremendous source of energy is something that people from many various countries drink.

So the next time you feel like you just can’t handle taking a flight, bookmark these tips for traveling with anxiety and you will be well on your way to travel bliss!  Oh, and take gloves to downward dog on dirty floors. 🙂

This is a fab post, and I’m thrilled to see other travel bloggers talking about mental health. I’ve just started yoga and noticed my breathing is calmer and it really helps (especially with three little kids around!) Swimming is also really helpful, just floating in the water is so peaceful!

Nice topic! Anxiety can eat us up whole, but our mind is powerful; we just have to know ourselves and find the right technique to relax our mind. I believe also that if we think positively and believe in ourselves that we can overcome any life situation, then everything will just glide smoothly no matter how hard life is. I also relax myself by drinking chamomile tea, go to spa and have a nice massage, open up something with a family member or a friend if life gets heavy, and lastly, the most important of all, I pray harder.
