Are you itching to stay in a family-friendly place in Mexico that isn’t a tourist trap? Get your fix in Puerto Penasco! Puerto Penasco (known to Gringos as Rocky Point) is revered as Mexico’s popular destination where the sand meets the sea.
While popular, it is also not overcrowded. I found wonderful moments of solitude there during the week while the weekend ushered in a mix of locals and tourists. (check out my previous post on fun things to do in Puerto Penasco for a real kick in the pants!)
Yes, I found Rocky Point to be a charming little place with an ample amount of beachfront hotels for you to rest your sandy head after playing on the beach all day. I was afforded the opportunity to stay at Penasco del Sol, one of the best beachfront hotels in Puerto Penasco, that I am amped to tell you about.
Penasco Del Sol
The luxurious Penasco Del Sol was just a quick few minute stroll from the beach, so you can imagine how stellar my views of the ocean were. There are cabanas that you can sprawl out in, a hottub and pool where you can get your relaxation game on, and spacious rooms that offer just as stunning views of the ocean. Need a massage on the beach? Done! Go build sand castles with the kids, rent a jet ski, or enjoy the cultural festivities (including local music and dancing) on the weekends.
I was really impressed by the overall food quality at Penasco Del Sol. Breakfast included quite a variety of food and you could either order off the menu or try the buffet. I tried both and actually preferred sampling the scrumptious buffet due to the variety of food I could have. For dinner, be sure you do not miss out on the fish! Top it all off with a delicious strawberry margarita and you will be set.
On the downside, I do feel like they could have had more activities there, but I am also a very active person. If you don’t like to be hassled by any of that, and prefer silence and solitude, Penasco Del Sol is YOUR SPOT!
The Grand Mayan
If you’re seeking grandeur and opulence, look no further than the polished Grand Mayan Vidanta Resort. Upon entrance to this eye-catching resort, I was blown away by the authentic Mayan architecture and decor. One glimpse at the longest lazy river I have ever seen in my life and I am certain I could have lounged on it all day! To top it off, inland from the resort towers lies the renowned Jack Nicklaus golf course.
Take note that the Grand Mayan is a timeshare residence so while there will be an abundance of activities to partake in, and an absurd amount of amenities (there is even a doctor on site), you will likely be asked whether you’d like to join the timeshare. One drawback, or benefit if you REALLY like seclusion, is that it is about a half an hour from downtown Puerto Penasco. Personally I think I’d get bored, but some people really want to feel like they’re on a deserted island!
Las Palomas
This is one of the newest beachfront resorts located at the center of the beach and upon entrance to it you are immediately taken aback by the seductive paradise. Rejuvenation will be yours as you float down the lazy river, watch your kids slide down the waterslide, or enjoy your beachfront view from your private balcony.
An even better idea is to hang out at the negative edge pool with swim up bar while you take in the scenery and enjoy quality family time. Alternatively, you could take your children to the kids club area and let them entertain the kids while you REALLY relax! Vendors on the beach will attempt to sell you jewelry or mangos and I can confirm the mangos are a real treat!
There are a wide array of amenities for you to enjoy at Las Palomas and more activities than you can imagine! A babysitting service, fitness center, and dry cleaning services are among other amenities you can choose from. During the day take your pick from horseback riding, parasailing, snorkeling/diving, mexican bingo, cooking classes, sand castle competitions, or beach volleyball!
So as you can see, there is no shortage of choices when it comes to picking out the best beachfront hotels in Puerto Penasco. What are you waiting for? Get to Puerto Penasco before everyone else discovers Mexico’s best kept secret!
If none of these options appeal to you, you should certainly check out Airbnb or VRBO to find something suitable.
*My special thanks to this hosted trip by the Puerto Penasco Convention and Visitors Bureau. Although my adventure was complimentary, all opinions are as always, my own.

Good article! I do agree with you that the hotels you mention are very nice, there are also several other beach front resorts that are equally as nice just with different amenities and often at lower rates.

Grand Mayan Vidanta Resort looks so divine. Just the pool alone makes me want to visit my local travel agent. It seems like a vacation more for a couple than a family.
